The objectives of the initial Master Plan study were as follows:
- Development of an integrated master plan to conserve the Anzali Wetland and its catchment, in close collaboration with Iranian counterpart organisations,
- Conduct of pilot projects identified during the study by Iranian national and local organisations, and
- Assistance with capacity development for responsible organisations, scientific research work, and establishing a co-ordination mechanism for overall wetland management.
Following the Master Plan study, NK was commissioned to undertake an Ecological Management Plan for the wetland itself. This includes a number of initiatives in the fields of Institutional Development, Planning / Zonation, Environmental Education, Ecotourism and Monitoring.
