Khulna Water Supply Improvement Project
Bangladesh
Period: 2010
Client/Finance: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
Khulna is the third largest city in Bangladesh (about 1.5 million populations), and its newly established autonomous water supply operator, Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWASA) has the water provision capacity of 125,000 m3/day, satisfying only 52 percent of the demand. Its existing water source is ground water which contains significant arsenic and the water extraction capacity is nearing the limit. Thus to satisfy the proper water needs of Khulna in future, augmentation of water supply capacity using river water is considered necessary.
Under the circumstances, JICA, based on a preparatory survey, has decided to extend assistance in establishing a Khulna water supply master plan for 2030 and a feasibility study on priority project for 2020. Tasks include: (i) financial projection of KWASA based on expected organisational and financial structure, and (ii) economic/financial evaluation and viability analysis by means of internal rate of return (IRR) for the priority project to be determined by the feasibility study.
