Operational Master Planning of Fishing Harbours

Iran

Period: 2010
Client/Finance: Shilat Organisation of Iran - Deputy Department of Catch & Fishing Harbours (Iranian Govt)

This master planning study was funded by Shilat (the Iranian fisheries authority) and was lead by the Iranian consultancy SAP, which appointed NKUK as their partners to provide the required international input to the study.

The study initially gathered a wide range of data from all 72 fishing harbours along the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf coasts of Iran. This was analysed in detail in order to characterise the harbours according to their facilities, condition, catch, employment, etc.

NKUK then undertook a review of the fisheries resources and fishing performance in the four provinces of the Persian Gulf in order to determine the likely future requirements for fishing harbours and facilities.

The conclusion was that Shilat investment in new harbours over the last decade has resulted in an over-supply of harbours, but under-investment in maintenance, dredging and harbour-side facilities. The next stage of the study is to categorise the ports in terms of their future use and their requirements for improvement, taking account of previous international experience in this sector.

Finally, a Master Plan report will be produced by SAP / NKUK and formally presented to Shilat.
