Management of Livestock Handling, Slaughter & Meat Processing Wastes, and Global Study on Reconstruction of Public Live Market, Slaughter and Meat Processing Facilities
Worldwide (Ethiopia, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Vietnam)
Period: 2007-2009
Client/Finance: World Bank
The recent global outbreaks of BSE, avian influenza, SARS, and other human diseases originating from animals have prompted the World Bank to investigate the effects of slaughter and meat processing waste management practices, with a view to publishing a Global Guidance document.
NKUK led the Nippon Koei teams for this important Bank Study in 5 countries. The aims of the study were to examine waste management conditions at livestock markets, slaughterhouses, meat processing facilities and retail markets, as well as observing transport and disposal methods and conditions. The team, which was composed of environmental scientists, epidemiologists, process specialists, economists and environmental engineers, then examined the potential risks associated with current practices and made recommendations for improvements.
Following the initial study, the same team was asked by the World Bank to investigate the reconstruction possibilities for slaughter and live market facilities across the developing world.
The projects are the first of their kind for the World Bank, and the results of the study are likely to have great importance for meat processing waste management practices worldwide, and as a result, global public health.
