Construction of La Union Port - Environmental Monitoring

NKUK provided the Environmental Specialist on a Nippon Koei team appointed by JBIC, and the Autonomous Executive Ports Commission (CEPA) of El Salvador, to supervise construction of the new La Union Port. Nippon Koei performed the role of Engineer and supervised the construction process over a period of 4 years. The aim of the environmental study was to conduct such monitoring, surveys, observations and studies as necessary to ensure that:
- The Contractor complies with all elements of the contract documents relating to environmental matters;
- All mitigation measures and conditions imposed by the Environmental Permit (granted by the government environment agency) are complied with;
- The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the project (prepared during the design stage) is implemented in full;
- All parties meet their legal obligations with respect to environmental protection and comply with national law and JBIC policy and procedure;
- No additional environmental damage is caused by the construction process;
- Any unforeseen environmental impacts are detected and mitigated promptly.
