Long Term Strategy and Feasibility Study for the Samur-Apsheron Canal System
Azerbaijan
Period: 2003-2004
Client/Finance: World Bank
The Samur Apsheron Canal (SAC) is a vital component of the country's infrastructure providing water to Baku city as well as much needed irrigation water to the coastal agricultural areas. Located in the north-eastern part of the country, the SAC system comprises a headworks across the Samur river, a 182 km long main supply canal, a reservoir near Baku City, pumping stations, three sediment structures and a number of secondary canals that supply water to the irrigation areas. The study assessed the future demand for water from agriculture and the city as well as the potential of the SAC system for increasing supplies from the Samur River, the smaller rivers adjacent to the canal and groundwater sources.
The proposed project included a new high dam and reservoir at Tahtakorpu, with associated hydropower potential, several proposed river diversions and pipelines and a new high-level canal route to the existing Jeiranbatan reservoir in Baku.
