Provincial Roads Improvement Project
Sri Lanka
Period: 2005-2009
Client/Finance: Japan Bank for International Cooperation
The aim of the project is to contribute to the development of the local economy in the Central and Sagaragamuwa Provinces through the improvement of the reliability and service level of the secondary road network. This will be achieved by rehabilitating and upgrading approximately 600 km of secondary roads and bridges in the two Provinces. Rehabilitation of the roads and bridges will be carried out in three phases, using local contractors procured through competitive bidding.
In parallel with the infrastructure rehabilitation component, complimentary components are included in the project, which cover capacity building for the Road Agencies of the Provincial Councils and MPCLG. This capacity building has a strong training focus and it aims to improve the capability of the Provincial Road Agencies to manage and maintain the secondary road networks, as well as improving the project management capability of the MPCLG.
