Yichang - Wanzhou Railway Project (Ensuring Safeguard Practices)
China
Period: 2004-2007
Client/Finance: Asian Development Bank
NKUK's Environment Director was appointed by the ADB to be the independent environmental expert responsible for oversight of the Yichang – Wanzhou Railway (YWR) Project in the Hubei province of China, in particular to ensure that the project complies with ADB safeguard policies.
The YWR railway project, connecting the cities of Yichang and Wanzhou in the Hubei Province of China, is funded by one of the ADB's largest ever loans - US$500 million out of a total project cost of US$1.2 billion.
This project is of strategic importance, connecting the cities upstream and downstream of the Three Gorges Dam. The bridge over the Yangtze at Yichang is near the last remaining spawning ground of the protected Chinese Sturgeon, and therefore demands particularly high standards of environmental management.
