Study for Improvement and Construction of the International Airport
Guatemala
Period: 2003-2005
Client/Finance: Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing/ Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
Guatemala's principal international airport, La Aurora, is located in the capital city. At an altitude of 1,500m and with a single 3,000m long runway non-stop fights to north N. America and Europe are not practicable.
Expansion of the airport within the existing site is limited by its position within the City and also topographic constraints. The task of the project team was to identify short term improvements for La Aurora airport and to identify a suitable site for a new international airport and to carry out preliminary design of a new airport for the site.
Tasks carried out by NKUK staff included:
- To carry out a review of national environmental impact assessment procedures in relation to site selection and construction/operation of a new international airport for Guatemala City.
- To carry out a site evaluation and short-listing process, using environmental and social impact criteria, to identify a site for the construction of a new international airport.
- To carry out an EIA for the final shortlist of four possible sites.
