Pre-feasibility of Bringing Extensive Livestock Systems under the Provisions of the Kyoto Protocol

Worldwide

Period: 2008-9
Client/Finance: World Bank

Worldwide study examining the pre-feasibility of including extensive pastoral livestock production systems within the carbon finance mechanisms of the Kyoto protocol.

The ultimate aim is to broaden business lines in the livestock sector by offering carbon finance money and project benefits to pastoralists living on rangelands in the developing world. Inclusion could have profound effects on climate change mitigation and poverty reduction.

The study comprised a review of the Kyoto protocol and the legal implications, a scoping of potential lands and beneficiaries, an analysis of potential benefits and constraints, and an analysis of potential techniques and methodologies.
