Transportation

Hajigabul to Kyurdamir Road – Lender’s Monitoring Consultant, Azerbaijan

EBRD has loaned USD 41 million to the Republic of Azerbaijan to reconstruct an 85 km long
section of the strategic “Silk Road”. Reconstruction of this road, which links Baku and Georgia,
is a high priority of the Government of Azerbaijan due to its contribution to national and regional
economic growth, international trade facilitation and the regional integration of Central Asia with
the Caucasus and ultimately Europe.

Baku to Samur Road – Lender’s Monitoring Consultant, Azerbaijan

EBRD is providing a loan of USD 100 million to the Republic of Azerbaijan to reconstruct a 60 km
long section of the main M2 road running along the Caspian Sea coast that links Baku to the
Russian border. Reconstruction of this road is a high priority of the Government of Azerbaijan
due to its strategic importance in the development of economic and trade ties with Russia.

King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) Desalination Plant, Saudi Arabia

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank has signed a mandate with the CAA
of Saudi Arabia, to assist in the rehabilitation or replacement of the desalination plant that
supplies water to the KAIA, through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or a similar Private Sector
Participation (PSP) structure. As part of this assignment, IFC will draw upon the services of Nippon
Koei UK (NKUK) as the Technical Consultant assisting IFC in all aspects of technical reviews
(engineering and environment).
NKUK will review the current and future requirements of water supply of the KAIA, prepare the
investment program necessary to meet these requirements (either through the rehabilitation or
replacement of existing desalination plants), and recommend service performance standards to be
included in the project agreements.

Astana Water Supply Project, Kazakhstan

The project includes for the upgrading of the water supply and sanitation of Astana, the capital
city of Kazakhstan. NKUK provided contractual and technical advice on specification and
measurement within the project team, led by NJS.

Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Feasibility Study, Nigeria, Niger & Algeria

NKUK has been commissioned to undertake the environmental and social impact studies of the
4,300km Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), as part of the feasibility study, which is being led
by Penspen.

Bumbuna Hydro-electric Project: Baseline Biodiversity Surveys, Sierra Leone

An Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Bumbuna Hydro-electric Project was carried out in
1996 and updated in 2005.
NKUK was responsible for the 2005 EIA update, and has now been commissioned to undertake a
series of Baseline Surveys in the Bumbuna Watershed, and a Desk Study on the proposed
Bumbuna Conservation Area.
